Meet Prof Johann Kirsten, agricultural economist and director of the Bureau of Economic Research at Stellenbosch University, as he discusses the Karoo Lamb Consortium and its efforts to protect Karoo Lamb as a geographical indication (GI) in South Africa.
The consortium was established to help producers, abattoirs, and retailers market Karoo Lamb with a protected GI status, ensuring its authenticity and allowing producers to command a premium price. This protection, a first for meat products in South Africa, helps prevent food fraud and misrepresentation, ultimately benefiting Karoo farmers, increasing revenue streams for the region, and fostering economic growth and employment in the Karoo.
When purchasing Karoo Lamb, look for the official government GI logo to ensure its authenticity.
